📄 Description & Care Instructions

The Apricot Tetra (Dectobrycon armeniacus) is a captivating species native to the upper Rio Tapajós Basin in Brazil. This species is characterized by its golden-yellow body, complemented by a dark blotch at the base of the caudal fin. Notably, two yellow spots are located immediately behind this dark blotch. Males typically exhibit more pronounced coloration and elongated fins compared to females.

Size: Typically reaches up to 6.6 cm in length.

Temperament: Peaceful and active; best kept in schools of at least six individuals to promote natural behavior and reduce skittishness.

Habitat: Prefers aquariums with plenty of aquatic plants, open swimming spaces, and subdued lighting or shade. Using a dark substrate will enhance their beautiful coloration.

Water Parameters:

  • pH: 5.5–7.0

  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)

  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (up to 12 dGH)

Diet: Omnivorous; accepts high-quality flake foods, live or frozen brine shrimp, and bloodworms.

Tankmates: Ideal companions include other peaceful species like rasboras, danios, and small cichlids. Avoid aggressive or larger fish that may intimidate or harm them.

Breeding: Spawning occurs in well-planted tanks with slightly acidic water. Post-spawning, remove adults to prevent egg predation. Fry hatch within 24–36 hours and can be fed infusoria or finely crushed flake food.
