Barbus tetrazona "Red" – Red Tiger Barb (2.5–3 inches)

Product description

The Red Tiger Barb (Barbus tetrazona "Red") is a vibrant freshwater fish with a deep reddish body, bold black vertical stripes, and bright orange to red fins. Known for its energy and schooling behavior, it adds striking color and activity to community aquariums. While lively and playful, it may nip fins if not kept in sufficient group sizes or housed with long-finned species.

Size

Adult length: ~2.5–3 inches (6–7.5 cm).

Active, mid-level schooling swimmer.

Behavior & Social Needs

  • Shoaling species: Best kept in groups of 6–8 or more to minimize aggression.

  • Lively swimmers that do best in planted or semi-open community setups.

  • Good tankmates include other barbs, danios, rasboras, and hardy tetras. Avoid angelfish or other long-finned tankmates.

Tank Conditions

  • Tank size: 20 gallons minimum for a school.

  • Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C).

  • pH: 6.0–7.5, with slightly acidic to neutral water preferred.

  • Setup suggestions: Mix of planted areas and open swimming spaces, with driftwood or rocks for structure. Moderate lighting enhances their red body coloration.

Diet

Omnivorous: Accepts quality flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.

A varied diet keeps colors vivid.

Lifespan & Hardiness

  • Hardy, adaptable, and beginner-friendly.

  • Average lifespan: 5–7 years with good care.
