Product description

The Pingi Hillstream Loach (Beaufortia pingi) is a specialized freshwater loach native to fast-flowing streams and rivers in China. It has a flattened body with a sucker-like mouth, allowing it to cling firmly to rocks in strong currents. Its subtle yet intricate coloration, combined with algae-grazing behavior, makes it a valuable addition to river-style aquariums. Known for its peaceful temperament, this species is suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists who can provide proper flow and oxygenation.

Size

  • Adult length: ~5–7 cm (2–2.8 inches).

  • Flattened body designed for bottom-dwelling and strong-current habitats.

Behavior & Social Needs

  • Peaceful, non-aggressive, and best kept in small groups of 3–5 individuals.

  • Enjoys grazing on rocks and surfaces with abundant biofilm and algae.

  • Compatible tankmates include small, peaceful species such as rasboras, tetras, dwarf shrimp, and other hillstream loaches. Avoid large, aggressive, or territorial fish.

Tank Conditions

  • Minimum tank size: 20–30 gallons.

  • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C).

  • pH: 6.5–7.5, slightly acidic to neutral preferred.

  • Setup suggestions: Strong water flow with high oxygenation, smooth rocks, driftwood, and shaded hiding spots. Fine sand or gravel substrate is ideal. Simulate a riverine environment to encourage natural behavior.

Diet

  • Omnivorous, primarily grazers.

  • Feeds on algae, biofilm, and specialized sinking wafers or pellets for hillstream loaches.

  • Can be supplemented with blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini) and occasional small live/frozen foods like daphnia.

  • Continuous access to natural grazing surfaces promotes healthy growth and coloration.

Lifespan & Hardiness

  • Hardy if provided with clean, oxygen-rich water and strong current.

  • Sensitive to poor water quality and low flow.

  • Average lifespan: 4–6 years in captivity.
