Blue King Tetra – Boehlkea fredcochui 5.5 cm
Description & Care Instructions
The Blue King Tetra, scientifically known as Boehlkea fredcochui, is a captivating species native to the Amazon River Basin in South America. This species is characterized by its slender, metallic-blue body and transparent fins, which shimmer under aquarium lighting. A distinctive blue horizontal stripe runs along its lateral line, adding to its visual appeal. Males typically exhibit more vivid coloration and a more streamlined body compared to females.
Size: Typically reaches up to 5.5 cm in length.
Temperament: Peaceful and active; best kept in schools of at least six individuals to promote natural behavior and reduce skittishness.
Habitat: Prefers aquariums with plenty of aquatic plants, open swimming spaces, and subdued lighting or shade. Using a dark substrate will enhance their beautiful coloration.
Water Parameters:
-
pH: 5.5–7.6
-
Temperature: 22.2–27.7°C (72–82°F)
-
KH: 5–12 dKH
Diet: Omnivorous; accepts high-quality dry and frozen foods.
Tankmates: Ideal companions include other peaceful species like rasboras, danios, and small cichlids. Avoid aggressive or larger fish that may intimidate or harm them.
Breeding: Spawning occurs in well-planted tanks with slightly acidic water. Post-spawning, remove adults to prevent egg predation. Fry hatch within 24–36 hours and can be fed infusoria or finely crushed flake food.
