Overview

The Queen Loach, scientifically known as Botia dario, is a small, colorful loach species from India and Bangladesh, admired for its golden-yellow body patterned with dark vertical stripes. Active and social, this bottom-dweller adds both beauty and energy to aquariums. Peaceful by nature, it does best in groups and shows fascinating social interactions typical of loaches.

Size

Adult length: ~2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm).

Bottom-dwelling, active swimmer.

Behavior & Social Needs

  • Shoaling species: Best kept in groups of 5–6 or more.

  • Peaceful but lively; enjoys exploring, hiding, and occasional playful chasing.

  • Good tankmates include tetras, rasboras, danios, barbs, and other peaceful loaches. Avoid aggressive or large predatory fish.

Tank Conditions

  • Tank size: 30 gallons minimum for a small group.

  • Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C).

  • pH: 6.0–7.5, slightly acidic to neutral preferred.

  • Setup suggestions: Provide sand or fine gravel substrate, plenty of hiding spots (rocks, caves, driftwood, dense plants), and moderate water flow to mimic natural streams.

Diet

A mixed diet enhances coloration and vitality.
