Product description
The Cherry Mouth Loach (Vanmanenia pingchowensis) is a captivating Freshwater Hillstream Loach native to the fast-flowing rivers of China. It is named for its distinctive reddish-pink mouth, which contrasts beautifully with its patterned, flattened body. This species is highly prized for its unique appearance and algae-grazing ability, making it a functional and decorative centerpiece for any river-style aquarium.

Size

  • Adult length: ~5–7 cm (2–2.8 inches).

  • Flattened, elongated body adapted for clinging to rocks and navigating strong currents.

Behavior & Social Needs

  • Generally peaceful and shy, particularly around larger or aggressive fish.

  • Best kept in small groups of 3–5 to encourage natural behavior while maintaining personal territories around hiding spots.

  • Compatible tankmates include small, non-aggressive species such as rasboras, small tetras, dwarf shrimp, and other hillstream species. Avoid aggressive or boisterous fish.

Tank Conditions

  • Minimum tank size: 20–30 gallons for a small group.

  • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C).

  • pH: 6.5–7.5, slightly acidic to neutral preferred.

  • Setup suggestions: Fast-flowing, well-oxygenated aquarium with smooth rocks, driftwood, and plenty of hiding spots. Fine gravel or sand substrate is ideal. Moderate to strong water current replicates natural habitat.

Diet

  • Omnivorous but primarily grazers.

  • Feed on algae, biofilm, and specialized sinking wafers or pellets for hillstream loaches.

  • Supplement occasionally with blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach) or small live/frozen foods like daphnia.

  • Continuous grazing opportunities are important for health and coloration.

Lifespan & Hardiness

  • Hardy if provided with clean, oxygen-rich water and strong current.

  • Sensitive to poor water quality; stable conditions are essential.

  • Average lifespan: 4–6 years in captivity.
