The Clown Loach (Chromobotia macracanthus), also known as the Tiger Botia, is a striking and active freshwater fish native to the rivers of Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia. Renowned for its vibrant orange body adorned with three bold black bands, this species is a favorite among aquarists. While they can grow up to 30 cm in the wild, in captivity, they typically reach around 12–15 cm. Their playful nature and unique behaviors, such as swimming upside down or playing dead, make them fascinating to observe.

Tank Size & Environment

• Minimum Tank Size: A group of 6–8 Clown Loaches requires a minimum of 200 liters (53 gallons). 

• Substrate: Soft, sandy substrate is ideal to protect their sensitive barbels. 

• Decor: Provide numerous hiding spots using driftwood, caves, and plants. 

• Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 26–30°C (79–86°F)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5

  • Hardness: 5–12° dGH 

Behavior & Tankmates

• Social Structure: Clown Loaches are social fish and should be kept in groups of at least 5–6 individuals to thrive.

• Temperament: They are peaceful and can coexist with other non-aggressive species. 

• Activity: Most active during dawn and dusk.

Diet

• Feeding Habits: Omnivorous; they enjoy a varied diet.

• Dietary Needs: Offer high-quality pellets, live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter.
