Gold-Fin Bitterling (Rhodeus cf. albomarginatus) – Rare Golden-Edged Variant
The Gold-Fin Bitterling, a visually captivating variant of Rhodeus albomarginatus native to China’s Lvjiang River tributary, stands out with elegant gold-tinged edges along its dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins—accentuating its sleek gray-silver body. During breeding, males may display reddish-orange on their belly and caudal peduncle, enhancing the gold highlights and giving this rare morph an almost regal glow. The distinct naming “albomarginatus” originally refers to white margins in the species, but this “Gold Fin” variety amplifies that trait with golden hues.
Optimal care for this delicate schooling fish includes a well-planted aquarium with stable water temperatures between 15–28 °C, clean and well-oxygenated water, and gentle flow patterns. For breeding, include live freshwater mussels—females deposit eggs inside the mussel’s gill chambers, where males fertilize them, and fry develop safely before hatching. Ensure a peaceful group of at least six to foster natural behavior and let their gold-edged fins shine in mature form.
