Product description

The Green Zebra Hillstream Loach is a beautifully patterned freshwater fish known for its striking zebra-like markings and peaceful temperament. Native to fast-moving rivers in Southeast Asia, this loach is uniquely adapted to cling to rocks in high-flow environments using its broad, sucker-like fins.

This species is ideal for aquarists seeking a fascinating algae grazer that adds both function and beauty to a river-style aquarium. Its flat body shape and constant grazing behavior make it a standout in any tank setup designed with flowing water and natural decor.

🧰 Care Instructions

Tank Requirements:

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons for a small group

  • Tank Setup: Smooth stones, driftwood, good surface area for grazing

  • Water Flow: Strong; mimics fast rivers (use powerheads or river manifold system)

  • Lighting: Moderate to high (to encourage algae growth)

  • Substrate: Smooth sand or fine gravel

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 68°F – 78°F (20°C – 26°C)

  • pH: 6.5 – 7.5

  • Hardness: 4 – 12 dGH

  • Filtration: Strong biological filtration and high oxygen levels are essential

Diet:

  • Naturally grazes on algae and biofilm

  • Supplement with:

  • Algae wafers

  • Spirulina-based sinking pellets

  • Blanched vegetables (e.g. spinach, zucchini)

  • Frozen/live foods like daphnia, bloodworms, brine shrimp

Behavior & Compatibility:

  • Peaceful, social fish — thrives best in groups of 3 or more

  • Compatible with other peaceful fish such as danios, rasboras, small tetras, and shrimp

  • Not suitable for aggressive or highly competitive feeders

Breeding:

  • Males may exhibit territorial behavior when spawning

  • Flat stones may encourage egg-laying behavior

  • Breeding success is more common in mature, stable setups with abundant biofilm
