Overview

The Chinese Algae Eater (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri) is a well-known freshwater fish valued for its algae-grazing ability. It has a long, golden to brownish body with a distinctive sucker mouth adapted for clinging to surfaces in fast-flowing waters. While useful for algae control in its younger stages, as it matures it may become territorial and less focused on algae grazing, especially with age and size.

Size

Adult length: ~5–11 inches (12–28 cm).

Bottom and mid-level swimmer, clings to glass and surfaces with its sucker mouth.

Behavior & Social Needs

  • Juveniles are peaceful and good algae grazers; adults can become territorial with tankmates.

  • Best kept singly in community tanks, or in very large aquariums if multiple are kept.

  • Suitable tankmates include larger tetras, barbs, danios, rainbowfish, and loaches. Avoid slow-moving, long-finned, or bottom-dwelling species that may be harassed.

Tank Conditions

  • Tank size: 40 gallons minimum for juveniles; 75+ gallons for adults.

  • Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C).

  • pH: 6.0–7.5, slightly acidic to neutral preferred.

  • Setup suggestions: Provide strong water flow, rocks, driftwood, and smooth surfaces for grazing. Leave open swimming space and ensure high oxygen levels.

Diet

Omnivorous (algae preference when young): Feeds on algae, biofilm, sinking algae wafers, spirulina, and fresh vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach). Adults should be supplemented with protein-based foods like bloodworms and shrimp.

Balanced feeding prevents aggression and ensures good health.

Lifespan & Hardiness

  • Hardy and adaptable but requires large tanks as it grows.

  • Average lifespan: 10+ years in well-maintained aquariums.
