๐Ÿ“„ Description & Care Instructions

Hemigrammus tocantinsi is a small, peaceful tetra species characterized by sexual dimorphism. Males display vibrant reddish to orange hues on their bodies and fins, while females exhibit a more subdued yellowish coloration. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the presence of 15โ€“17 branched anal-fin rays and a longitudinal stripe that is relatively narrow anteriorly and wider posteriorly. Additionally, it has one or two maxillary teeth.ย

Habitat: Native to the tributaries of the Rio das Almas and Rio Paranรฃ, within the upper Rio Tocantins basin, Goiรกs State, Brazil. These areas are characterized by clear, slightly acidic waters with low mineral content.ย

Water Parameters:

  • pH: 5.5โ€“7.0

  • Temperature: 24โ€“28ยฐC (75โ€“82ยฐF)

  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (up to 12 dGH)

Diet: Omnivorous; accepts high-quality flake foods, live or frozen brine shrimp, and bloodworms.

Tankmates: Ideal companions include other peaceful species like rasboras, danios, and small cichlids. Avoid aggressive or larger fish that may intimidate or harm them.

Breeding: Spawning occurs in well-planted tanks with slightly acidic water. Post-spawning, remove adults to prevent egg predation. Fry hatch within 24โ€“36 hours and can be fed infusoria or finely crushed flake food.
