📦 Description

The Chinese Hillstream Loach (Pseudogastromyzon cheni) is a compact, slightly flattened loach reaching about 5–6 cm in adult length. It exhibits variable mottled and patchy markings, often with a red-tipped dorsal fin. Native to fast-flowing, oxygen-rich mountain streams in southern China, it uses its suction-disc mouth to cling to smooth rocks. These loaches are active, peaceful bottom dwellers that graze on natural biofilm and small invertebrates. They are best kept in groups and thrive in pristine, high-oxygen aquaria.

🧰 Care Instructions

  • Tank Size: Minimum 20 g (≈75 L), with longer footprint recommended.

  • Water Flow & Oxygen: Very strong unidirectional flow (~10× turnover/hour) and high oxygen levels essential.

  • Water Conditions:

    • Temperature: 64–75 °F (18–24 °C)

    • pH: 6.5–7.5

    • Hardness: Moderate (4–12 °dGH)

  • Substrate & Decor: Smooth sand or fine gravel with many rounded river stones and flat rocks. Provide hiding spots and grazing surfaces aligned with flow.

  • Diet: Primarily grazes algae and biofilm. Supplement with algae wafers, spirulina pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional live/frozen invertebrates like daphnia or microworms.

  • Behavior & Tank Mates: Peaceful and shoaling. Keep in groups of 6 or more to reduce stress and encourage natural interaction. Compatible with other small, peaceful stream fish and shrimp.

  • Maintenance: Maintain an established tank with mature biofilm. Weekly partial water changes (20–30%). Avoid over-cleaning grazing surfaces. Monitor for health issues—sunken bellies can indicate nutritional problems. Sex mature males may show tiny nasal tubercles.
