Overview

The Mini Snowball Pleco (Hypancistrus sp. L471) is a highly sought-after dwarf pleco species, prized for its striking black body covered in bright white to yellowish spots. Native to the Rio Tapajós in Brazil, this species remains small and is ideal for aquarists who want a visually stunning yet manageable pleco for community aquariums. Peaceful and reclusive, it thrives in aquariums with caves, clean water, and moderate current.

Size

Adult length: ~3.5–4 inches (9–10 cm).

Small, bottom-dwelling pleco.

Behavior & Social Needs

Generally peaceful and well-suited for community aquariums.

Can be territorial with other Hypancistrus or plecos of similar size if not enough caves or hiding spots are available.

Best kept with small, peaceful tankmates such as tetras, rasboras, corydoras, and dwarf cichlids. Avoid large or aggressive fish.

Tank Conditions

Tank size: 20+ gallons recommended.

Temperature: 78–86°F (25–30°C).

pH: 6.0–7.5, slightly acidic to neutral water preferred.

Setup suggestions: Provide numerous caves, driftwood, and smooth rocks for hiding. Prefers moderate current and highly oxygenated water. Subdued lighting enhances activity.

Diet

Omnivorous with a preference for protein.

Accepts sinking carnivore pellets, wafers, and frozen/live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Will also graze on biofilm but does not consume large amounts of algae or wood.

A protein-rich, varied diet supports vibrant coloration and breeding.

Lifespan & Hardiness

Hardy but requires clean, well-oxygenated water and stable parameters.

Average lifespan: 8–10 years in captivity.
