Product description

The Red Phantom Tetra (Hyphessobrycon sweglesi) is a small, striking freshwater fish with a silvery body tinged with red on the fins and a prominent black patch behind the gills. A peaceful and active schooling fish, it adds vibrant movement and subtle color to community aquariums. While generally non-aggressive, males may show mild fin nipping during breeding displays.

Size

Adult length: ~3.5–4 inches (9–10 cm).

Compact, mid-level schooling swimmer.

Behavior & Social Needs

  • Shoaling species: Keep in groups of at least 6–8, larger schools (10+) encourage natural behavior and reduce aggression.

  • Energetic swimmers that do well in planted community tanks.

  • Compatible tankmates include other small tetras, rasboras, and peaceful barbs. Avoid large or aggressive fish.

Tank Conditions

  • Tank size: 20 gallons minimum for a proper school.

  • Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C).

  • pH: 6.0–7.5, slightly acidic to neutral is ideal.

  • Setup suggestions: Provide planted areas with driftwood or rocks, open swimming spaces, and moderate lighting to highlight their subtle red hues.

Diet

Omnivorous: Accepts flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.

A varied diet enhances their red fin coloration.

Lifespan & Hardiness

  • Hardy and suitable for beginner aquarists when water parameters are stable.

  • Average lifespan: 4–6 years under good care.
