The Kuhli Loach (Pangio kuhlii), also known as the Coolie Loach, is a slender, eel-like freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. With its distinctive black and orange banding, it adds a unique visual appeal to aquariums. Typically reaching lengths of 4–5 cm, it is a nocturnal, peaceful bottom dweller that thrives in groups.

Tank Size & Environment

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons (75 liters) Substrate: Fine sand or smooth gravel to prevent injury during burrowing. Decor: Provide ample hiding spots using driftwood, caves, and dense plantings. Floating plants can help dim lighting, mimicking their natural habitat. Β Water Parameters:

    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard waterΒ 

    • Filtration: Gentle filtration with minimal water movement; sponge filters are ideal to avoid strong currents.

  • Temperament: Peaceful and social; best kept in groups of 4 or more to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior.

  • Compatibility: Suitable for community tanks with other small, non-aggressive species. Avoid keeping with aggressive or fin-nipping fish.
