Overview
The King Tiger Pleco (Hypancistrus sp. L333) is a beautifully patterned Loricariid catfish native to the Xingu River in Brazil. Known for its striking black-and-white striped pattern, it is one of the most popular Hypancistrus species in the aquarium hobby. Unlike larger common plecos, the L333 remains relatively small, making it a great choice for medium-sized aquariums. Peaceful and shy, it spends most of its time near the bottom, hiding in caves or among driftwood.
Size
Adult length: ~5–6 inches (12–15 cm).
Compact, bottom-dwelling species.
Behavior & Social Needs
Generally peaceful and best kept with other small to medium peaceful community fish.
Males may show territorial behavior toward one another, especially around caves.
Ideal tankmates include tetras, rasboras, corydoras, small loaches, and other peaceful species. Avoid aggressive or highly competitive bottom-dwellers.
Tank Conditions
Tank size: 30+ gallons for a single adult, larger if keeping multiple.
Temperature: 78–86°F (25–30°C).
pH: 6.0–7.5, soft, slightly acidic to neutral water preferred.
Setup suggestions: Provide driftwood, rock caves, and hiding places. Strong filtration, moderate water flow, and high oxygen levels are essential. Dim lighting enhances natural behavior.
Diet
Omnivorous with a preference for protein-rich foods. Accepts sinking carnivore pellets, wafers, and frozen/live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blackworms. Will also nibble on blanched vegetables and algae-based foods.
A varied diet promotes vibrant coloration and healthy growth.
Lifespan & Hardiness
Relatively hardy when given clean, well-oxygenated water.
Average lifespan: 8–12 years in captivity.
