L398-Panaqolus tankei – Tanke Tiger Pleco ~3–4 cm
A striking dwarf pleco with bold orange or yellow and black tiger-style stripes across its body and fins. Named in honor of aquarist Andreas Tanke, this species is a standout among plecos for its vivid coloration and manageable size.
Natural Habitat:
Native to Brazil’s Rio Xingu (lower basin), dwelling among sunken wood in clear, flowing waters. It is a xylophagous (wood-eating) species perfectly adapted to these habitats.
Care Guidelines
-
Tank Setup:
-
Size: Minimum 75 liters (20 gallons) for one, ideally more if keeping a group.
-
Decor: Plenty of driftwood and caves for hiding and grazing; smooth substrate advised.
-
Water Flow & Filtration: Moderate flow and efficient filtration are essential to maintain oxygen and cleanliness.
-
-
Water Conditions:
-
Temperature: 24–28 °C (75–82 °F)
-
pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.5–7.5)
-
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (approx. 4–10 dGH)
-
-
Diet:
-
Primarily herbivorous/xylophagous—requires wood, algae wafers, veggie-based sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables (zucchini, sweet potato).
-
Supplement with protein-rich treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
-
-
Behavior & Tankmates:
-
Generally peaceful and primarily nocturnal. Can be territorial with conspecifics unless sufficient hiding spots are provided.
-
Compatible with small, peaceful community fish (e.g., tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids). Avoid pairing with aggressive bottom-dwellers.
-
-
Breeding:
-
Cave spawner: males guard eggs inside caves. Spawning can be encouraged with caves, stable conditions, and slightly raising water temperature.
-
Lifespan:
-
Can live for around 8–10 years under ideal care.
