Macrognathus aculeatus – Lesser Spiny Eel (~20–35 cm / 8–14″)
📦 Description
Macrognathus aculeatus (commonly known as the Lesser Spiny Eel) is a slender, eel-like freshwater fish reaching 20–35 cm in length. It is widely distributed across Southeast Asia and is distinguished by its elongated snout, series of dorsal spines, and body patterned with irregular blotches or band-like markings. Although not a true eel, it shares the burrowing and nocturnal behaviors typical of spiny eels.
🧰 Care Instructions
-
Tank Size: Minimum 75 L (~20 gal), but ideally 150 L+ (40 gal+) for swimming space and stability.
-
Water Flow & Oxygen: Low to moderate current; high dissolved oxygen is important.
-
Water Parameters:
-
Temperature: 24–28 °C (75–82 °F)
-
pH: 6.5–7.5
-
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (up to ~12 dGH)
-
-
Substrate & Decor: Fine sand or smooth gravel to allow burrowing. Include rocks, driftwood, or PVC tubes for hiding.
-
Diet: Carnivorous and mainly nocturnal; feed frozen/live protein such as bloodworms, tubifex, brine shrimp. Some individuals may accept sinking pellets after acclimation.
-
Behavior & Tank Mates: Shy and best kept singly or in small groups of 2–3 in larger tanks. May prey on very small fish or shrimp. Compatible with larger, peaceful community fish that occupy mid to upper water zones.
-
Maintenance: Excellent filtration and weekly partial water changes (20–30%) required. Keep the tank tightly covered, as spiny eels are skilled escape artists.
