Macropodus chinensis – Chinese (Round-tailed) Paradise Fish (~6 cm)
A graceful labyrinth fish with a round tail (unlike the forked one of typical Paradise Fish). It displays subtle, natural hues—bands of muted blue-green and soft oranges—becoming more vibrant during courtship. Males grow slightly larger and more colorful than females.
Tank Setup:
-
Minimum length: ~60–100 cm (about 60–100 L) for a pair
-
Pale gravel or bare bottom and dense planting
-
Floating plants or driftwood to simulate peaceful, shaded habitats
-
Secure lid essential: excellent jumpers
Water Conditions:
-
Temperature: 16–26 °C, can handle cooler periods (even down to 10 °C in some strains)
-
pH: 6.0–8.0
-
Hardness: soft to moderate, around 3–15 °dH (≈5–19 dGH)
Diet:
Omnivorous—eats high-protein foods like live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, insect larvae, worms, plus flakes or pellets. Feeding once or twice daily keeps them healthy and colorful.
Behavior & Tankmates:
-
Can be kept in peaceful community setups
-
Males become territorial during breeding—better housed singly or as a pair
-
Suitable tankmates include peaceful medium or large species that won't be harassed
Breeding:
Bubble-nest builder: the male builds a foam nest among surface cover and courts the female. After spawning, he guards the fry until they hatch and become free-swimming (usually within a few days).
Hardiness:
Quite hardy and accommodating of wide water conditions. This includes unheated tanks and even outdoor ponds in cooler climates.
