Macropodus opercularis – Paradise Fish (~5–7 cm)
A striking labyrinth fish with vibrant blue-green and reddish vertical bands on a pale background. Males are more colorful, larger, and have elongated fins compared to females. Known for their bold presence and flamboyant displays.
Tank Setup:
-
Size: Minimum 80 cm long or about 100 L for a pair; larger is better to reduce aggression.
-
Decor: Dense planting, floating cover, driftwood, caves, and secure lid—excellent jumpers and bubble-nesters.
-
Water Flow: Gentle to moderate, with still areas for nesting.
Water Conditions:
-
Temperature: 16–26 °C (some sources say up to 28 °C for spawning).
-
pH: 6.0–8.5; soft to medium hardness (e.g., 4–19 dGH).
Diet:
Omnivorous—thrives on high-protein foods like insects, brine shrimp, bloodworms, plus quality flakes or pellets and occasional vegetable matter.
Behavior & Tankmates:
-
Territorial and aggressive, especially adult males. Best kept as a single male with one or more females, or solitary.
-
Suitable tankmates: Larger, robust, non-aggressive species like larger tetras, loaches, gouramis, or catfish. Avoid small or flowing-finned fish.
Breeding:
Male builds a bubble nest among floating plants. After spawning, the female should be removed to prevent aggression; the male guards the nest. Fry emerge in 24–50 hours and grow fast; offer infusoria or brine shrimp initially.
Lifespan & Origin:
-
Lifespan: Up to 8–10 years with proper care.
