🐠 Species Overview

The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is one of the most popular and iconic freshwater aquarium fish. Native to the clearwater and blackwater streams of the Amazon Basin in South America, it is known for its vibrant iridescent blue body and striking red stripe that extends from the middle of the body to the tail. Neon Tetras are peaceful schooling fish and exhibit their best colors when kept in groups of 6 or more.

  • Minimum Tank Size: 10–20 gallons (38–75 liters) for a small school.

  • Substrate: Fine gravel or sand; darker substrates enhance their colors.

  • Decor: Heavily planted aquariums with driftwood and floating plants create hiding spots and mimic natural habitat.

  • Water Parameters: Temperature 70–81Β°F (21–27Β°C), pH 6.0–7.0, soft to moderately hard water.

  • Filtration: Gentle filtration; sensitive to sudden changes in water quality, ammonia, or nitrites.

  • Peaceful and social; keep in schools of 6 or more.

  • Compatible with other small, non-aggressive species such as Rummy Nose Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, Corydoras, and small rasboras.
