Size

• Adult size typically ranges from 2.5 to 3 inches (6–7.5 cm), including the fins.

Behavior & Social Needs

• Generally peaceful but may become territorial during spawning—best kept as a pair or small group in well-structured tanks.

• Performs well with calm tankmates like tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and dwarf shrimp.

Tank Conditions

• Tank Size: Minimum of 20 gallons for a pair, larger tanks encourage natural behaviors and better water stability.

• Temperature: Prefer 78–85 °F (25–29 °C), with approx. 80 °F being ideal.

• pH: Slightly acidic to neutral—5.0–7.5.

• Hardness: Soft to moderately soft water preferred.

• Setup: A planted aquarium with fine sandy substrate, driftwood or Indian almond leaves (for natural tannins), flat stones for spawning, and moderate lighting best replicate their native environment. 

Diet

• Omnivorous—thrive on a balanced diet of high-quality cichlid flakes or pellets, with live or frozen protein-rich foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.

Lifespan & Hardiness

• Moderately sensitive—requires stable, mature aquarium conditions. Lifespan typically ranges 3–5 years under proper care.
