Product description

The Fang’s Hillstream Loach (Pseudogastromyzon fangi) is a unique and attractive freshwater Loach native to fast-flowing mountain streams in China. It features a flattened body, sucker-like mouth, and intricate patterns along its body that help it blend seamlessly with rocks in its natural habitat. This species is highly prized for its distinctive appearance and algae-grazing behavior

Size

  • Adult length: ~5–6 cm (2–2.4 inches).

  • Flattened, elongated body designed for bottom-dwelling in strong currents.

Behavior & Social Needs

  • Peaceful and shy, especially around larger or aggressive fish.

  • Best kept in small groups of 3–5 to encourage natural behavior while allowing individual territories.

  • Compatible with small, non-aggressive species such as rasboras, small tetras, dwarf shrimp, and other hillstream loaches. Avoid aggressive or boisterous tankmates.

Tank Conditions

  • Minimum tank size: 20–30 gallons for a small group.

  • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C).

  • pH: 6.5–7.5, slightly acidic to neutral preferred.

  • Setup suggestions: Strong water flow and high oxygenation with smooth rocks, driftwood, and hiding spots. Fine sand or gravel substrate allows natural grazing and movement.

Diet

  • Omnivorous, primarily grazers.

  • Feeds on algae, biofilm, and specialized sinking wafers or pellets for hillstream loaches.

  • Can be supplemented with blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini) and occasional small live/frozen foods like daphnia.

  • Continuous grazing is essential for healthy growth and vibrant coloration.

Lifespan & Hardiness

  • Hardy under stable, oxygen-rich conditions with strong water flow.

  • Sensitive to poor water quality and stagnant environments.

  • Average lifespan: 4–6 years in captivity.
