Overview

The Lianjiang Hillstream Loach (Pseudogastromyzon lianjiangensis) is a rare and captivating freshwater loach from fast-flowing mountain streams in China. It features a flattened, ray-like body with broad pectoral fins adapted for clinging to rocks in strong currents. Its pattern of dark and golden mottling makes it both an excellent algae grazer and a visually unique aquarium fish. Peaceful and specialized, it thrives in well-oxygenated, river-style setups.

Size

Adult length: ~2.5–3 inches (6–7.5 cm).

Bottom-dwelling species with suction-adapted fins.

Behavior & Social Needs

  • Peaceful, best kept in small groups of 3–6 for natural social interaction.

  • Spends most time grazing on rocks, glass, and decor surfaces.

  • Excellent community fish when housed with other peaceful species like danios, rasboras, and small tetras. Avoid aggressive or large predatory fish.

Tank Conditions

  • Tank size: 20–30 gallons minimum, with strong current and high oxygenation.

  • Temperature: 68–75°F (20–24°C). Cooler, flowing water preferred.

  • pH: 6.5–7.5, soft to neutral water ideal.

  • Setup suggestions: River-style tank with smooth rocks, pebbles, driftwood, and fine sand substrate. Provide shaded spots and strong water movement.

Diet

Omnivorous (with algae/biofilm focus): Constantly grazes surfaces, but also requires supplemental feeding with algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach), and occasional live/frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia).

A varied diet supports health and natural grazing behavior.

Lifespan & Hardiness

  • Hardy once acclimated, but requires clean, well-oxygenated water with strong flow.

  • Average lifespan: 8–10 years under optimal care.
