The Purple Fin Loach (Pseudogastromyzon laticeps) is a compact hillstream loach reaching up to 6 cm in length. It is endemic to fast‑flowing, oxygen-rich streams of Guangdong province, China. The species is admired for its striking purple dorsal and caudal fins contrasting with a flattened, algae‑grazing body. They are social, peaceful bottom dwellers that interact playfully when kept in groups. Ideal for aquarists seeking a small but colorful stream loach suitable for aquascape or river biotope aquaria.

• Tank Size: Minimum 20 gallons (~75 L) with longer footprint for better flow.

• Water Flow & Oxygen: High flow (≥10× turnover per hour) and excellent aeration required for healthy behavior.

• Water Conditions:

  • Temperature: 68–75 °F (20–24 °C)

  • pH: 6.0–7.5 (optimal 6.6–7.5)

  • Hardness: Soft to moderate (GH 6–12, KH 1–2, TDS 100–300 ppm) 

• Substrate & Decor: Smooth sand or fine gravel with many smooth rocks, pebbles, and driftwood for grazing surfaces and shelter.

• Diet: Specialized biofilm grazer; supplement with algae wafers, sinking spirulina pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional live/frozen protein such as daphnia or bloodworms.

• Social Behavior: Shoaling species; keep in groups of six or more to encourage natural behavior. Males may display mild territorial sparring. 

• Maintenance: Mature aquarium required. Weekly partial water changes (20–30%), meticulous filtration, and preserving biofilm on surfaces critical. Avoid over-cleaning hardscape.
