Rhinogobius filamentosus – ~6 cm Stream Goby

The Filamented Goby (Rhinogobius filamentosus) is a charming, stream-dwelling goby hailing from China’s Lijiang, Xijiang, and Beijiang River systems. Typically reaching up to 6 cm in standard length, this species features subtle transverse stripes and delicate fin extensions in males. Its elegant form and expressive behavior bring a dynamic, natural streamscape to any planted or biotope-style aquarium.

Care Instructions

• Tank Setup:

  • Size: Minimum 60 L (~15 US gallons) tank.

  • Substrate: A mix of sand, fine gravel, and smooth river stones.

  • Decor: Use driftwood, terracotta pipes, or rocks to create shaded cave-like structures and visual barriers.

• Water Conditions:

  • Temperature: 18–25 °C.

  • pH: 6.0–8.0.

  • Hardness: General 54–268 ppm (GH), carbonate 2–10° (KH).

• Filtration & Flow:

  • Requires spotless, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow to replicate natural streams; use efficient filtration and powerheads or airstones.  

• Feeding:

  • Opportunistic carnivore—feeds on small invertebrates in the wild.

  • In captivity, offer live or frozen foods like bloodworms, Artemia, Daphnia; introduce dried foods gradually.  

• Behavior & Social Needs:

  • Can be mildly territorial—provide ample cover and avoid overcrowding.

  • Keep in small groups for natural interaction; avoid aggressive tankmates.
