Description

The Wuyi Stream Goby (Rhinogobius wuyiensis) is a subtle, freshwater jewel native to the Wuyi River tributaries in Zhejiang Province, China. Compact and sleek, it grows to approximately 4 cm standard length, with males slightly larger than females. Recognizable by its irregular head spot patterns and well-defined cephalic lateralis canals, this goby inhabits cool, subtropical bottom zones. While rarely available in the trade, it brings authentic stream-side charm to specialized aquariums.

Care Instructions

  • Tank Setup:

    • Use a small to medium aquarium (20–30 L). Include fine sand or smooth gravel with flat stones and driftwood to mimic its natural stream habitat.

  • Water Conditions:

    • Temperature: 18–22 °C (cool-temperate).

    • Maintain clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate gentle flow to reflect its natural environment.

  • Diet:

    • Omnivorous benthic feeder—offers of small meaty foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and microcrustaceans are ideal.

  • Behavior & Social Setup:

    • Peaceful and bottom-dwelling, but may show mild territoriality among males. A small group with structured hiding zones works best.

  • Availability & Alertness:

    • As a little-known species from a specific locale, availability is limited. Offer cautiously to aquarium enthusiasts with experience in rare gobies.
