Overview

The Amphu Goby (Schismatogobius ampluvinculus) is a rare and fascinating freshwater goby native to the Philippines, where it inhabits clear, fast-flowing streams with sandy and gravelly substrates. Known for its striking sexual dimorphism, males display darker bodies with bold markings, while females are paler with blotches. A small, peaceful bottom-dweller, it is prized by specialist aquarists for its rarity and unique appearance, but requires clean, oxygen-rich water to thrive.

Size

Adult length: ~2.3–3 inches (6–7.5 cm).

Small, bottom-oriented species that clings to rocks and substrate.

Behavior & Social Needs

Peaceful, though males may show mild territorial behavior.

Best kept in pairs or small groups with plenty of hiding places.

Ideal tankmates include other small, peaceful riverine fish such as danios, rasboras, and hillstream loaches. Avoid aggressive or much larger species.

Tank Conditions

Tank size: 15–20 gallons minimum for a small group.

Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C).

pH: 6.5–7.5, neutral to slightly acidic preferred.

Setup suggestions: Provide sandy or fine gravel substrate, smooth rocks, driftwood, and shaded hiding areas. Maintain strong water flow, high oxygenation, and pristine water quality.

Diet

Carnivorous/micro-predator: Consumes insect larvae, small worms, and micro-crustaceans in the wild. In aquaria, accepts live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. May gradually adapt to small sinking pellets.

Lifespan & Hardiness

Sensitive species requiring expert care and stable, clean water conditions.

Average lifespan: 3–5 years in captivity.
