Siniperca obscura – Obscure Chinese Perch (~6–12 cm)

A small, laterally flattened perch native to southern China. Its body is dark in coloration, optimizing camouflage in shaded stream environments. It grows to about 6–12 cm, notably smaller than its relatives 

Habitat & Behavior:

• Found in lowland rivers and streams below 300 meters elevation, particularly in tributaries south of the Yangtze River basin. 

• Occupies a benthopelagic niche—mid to bottom water zones—and uses its dark body to remain hidden and ambush prey. 

• Classified as Least Concern, indicating relatively stable wild populations. 

Tank Setup:

• Size: A smaller species—approx. 40–60 L (~10–15 gallons) may accommodate a few individuals—but generous space with gentle flow is ideal.

• Decor: Use dark substrate, driftwood, and dense planting to mimic shaded streambeds and offer hiding spots.

• Flow & Filtration: Soft water movement with good filtration is recommended to maintain water clarity and oxygenation.

Water Conditions:

• Optimal parameters are not well-documented, but similar Siniperca species prefer temperate, stable water between ~18–24 °C, neutral to slightly acidic pH, and moderate softness.

• Mimicking a shaded, slow-moving stream with clean, oxygenated water will support their well-being.

Diet:

• A carnivorous, ambush feeder targeting live prey such as small fish or crustaceans.

• Likely reluctant to accept stationary or processed foods, making live feeding the most reliable diet.

Behavior & Tankmates:

• Likely territorial and solitary by nature.

• Best kept in small numbers (2–3) or alone; avoid pairing with small or slow-moving tankmates that may be seen as prey.

Breeding:

• No documented breeding in captivity. Its behavior and ecology suggest it might scatter eggs over structure, similar to related species—but this is speculative.
