Product Description & Care Instructions

The Volcano Bitterling (Sinorhodeus microlepis) is an exceptional and recently described species of bitterling found only in a tributary of China’s Yangtze River, near Chongqing. In vivid breeding displays, males transform into radiant shades of red and wax yellow with reddish fins, while females appear more silvery—making them true living treasures in a planted aquarium

Inhabiting slow-flowing streams with mixed gravel and mud substrates, this subtropical freshwater fish thrives under stable conditions. Although detailed aquarium care guidelines are limited, here’s a refined approach based on its natural habitat and bitterling biology:

  • Tank Conditions: Maintain a planted, well-filtered tank with gentle water flow, mimicking stream environments.

  • Water Parameters: Target a temperature between 18–24 °C, a pH of 6–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water conditions

  • Social Behavior: Keep in small shoals of at least 5–6 individuals; their social nature promotes natural activity.

  • Feeding: A varied diet including flakes, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods supports their health and coloration.

  • Breeding Behavior: Unique among bitterlings, Volcano Bitterling lays eggs inside the Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea), rather than freshwater mussels—underscoring its ecological niche and importance.

Conservation Note: Classified as Critically Endangered, S. microlepis faces population declines and habitat threats, making captive breeding and ethical trade essential for its future survival.
