Yunnanilus pulcherrimus (now often placed in Micronemacheilus) is a petite stone loach native to the Hongshuihe River basin in Guangxi, China. Adults reach about 4 cm standard length and have long, slender bodies patterned with fine vertical stripes crossing a broader central band. The species name “pulcherrimus” means “most beautiful,” referring to its elegant markings . These loaches are peaceful, curious, and especially active in small groups, sometimes hovering mid-water rather than strictly bottom-dwelling, when kept in mature, well-lit aquaria

• Tank Size: Minimum 10 US gallons (≈40 L), though broader tanks (20 gal long) are ideal for stable water flow and group dynamics.

• Water Conditions:

  • Temperature: 20–26 °C (68–79 °F)

  • pH: ~6.0–8.0

  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (GH ~4–15 dGH)

• Substrate & Decor: Fine smooth sand or soft gravel to protect sensitive barbels. Provide plants, gentle flow, and open swim space.

• Diet: Omnivorous—feeds on microalgae and biofilm; supplement daily with fine sinking pellets, micro flakes, and occasional live/frozen foods like daphnia or microworms.

• Behavior & Social Needs: Highly social; keep in groups of 8–10 or more to reduce shyness and promote natural hovering behavior 

• Maintenance: Regular water changes (20–30%) and stable mature tank conditions are necessary. Do not scrub all biofilm; allow some natural surfaces for grazing.
